Gipsverband immobiliseert een ledemaat bij een breuk of blessure, als klassiek gipsverband of als lichtere kunststof (soft)cast. Polstering hoort erbij. De keuze hangt af van het type cast en de toepassing. Met polstering eronder om de huid tegen druk te beschermen. Als klassiek gips, kunststof cast of semi-rigide softcast.

Gipsverband

Gipsverband houdt een gebroken of geblesseerd lichaamsdeel in de juiste stand stil, zodat het kan genezen. Naast het klassieke gips zijn er moderne, lichtere kunststof casts.

Soorten

Klassiek gipsverband: gipswindsels die na bevochtigen uitharden tot een stevige cast.
Kunststof cast: lichter en sterker dan gips, vaak waterbestendig.
Softcast: een semi-rigide cast voor situaties die wat meer flexibiliteit vragen.

Polstering

Onder elke cast hoort polstering (wattenverband of een ondertricot) om de huid tegen druk te beschermen. Bekende merken zijn onder meer Lohmann & Rauscher, 3M en Actimove.

Veelgestelde vragen

Wat is het verschil tussen gips en een kunststof cast?

Klassiek gips is zwaarder en niet waterbestendig; een kunststof cast is lichter, sterker en vaak waterbestendig.

Waarom polsteren onder gips?

De polsterlaag beschermt de huid en botuitsteeksels tegen druk en voorkomt drukplekken onder de harde cast.
